Letter to President Obama

President Barack Obama
The White House
Washington, DC

Dear Mr. President,

I join with the National Interreligious Initiative in strongly supporting your commitment to provide U.S. leadership for achieving Arab-Israeli-Palestinian peace, including your appointment of former Senator George Mitchell as Special Envoy.

The informal Geneva Accord, the People's Voice Initiative and recently released details of a two-state solution (New York Times magazine 2/13/2011) negotiated by Israeli Prime Minister Olmert and Palestinian President Abbas in 2008, combined with the Arab Peace Initiative, demonstrate that peace is possible.

Recent events in Egypt and elsewhere in the Middle East make it even more urgent that the United States, in coordination with the Quartet, work actively with the parties to achieve peace this year. Arab-Israeli-Palestinian peace is essential for the people of the Middle East and for U.S. national security interests, including reducing threats of terrorism.

I am confident, if you provide active, fair and firm leadership for peace that you can count on majority support in churches, synagogues and mosques across our country.
